Both sexes bear horns, also called “krucken,” which can grow up to 25 centimeters long and are circular in cross-section, rising straight and curving backward at the tip.
The animal prefers to stay in the upper forest belt but often climbs further into the mountains in summer. If disturbed further down, the chamois will retreat to the most inaccessible areas, from where it visits the grassy spots between the rocks at dawn. In winter, it moves back into the forests.
- Females and young animals live in herds of 15 to 30 animals.
